TV and Bluetooth: Everything You Need to Know

TV and Bluetooth: Everything You Need to Know

In today’s world, most smart TVs will come with Bluetooth functionality. This expands the options for setting up your perfect home entertainment system and is simple to use after you know how.

Today’s article will cover TV and Bluetooth including:

  • What Bluetooth is
  • Checking if your TV has Bluetooth
  • Connecting your TV to Bluetooth devices
  • A selection of our best-selling Bluetooth TVs

Let’s delve into everything Bluetooth!

What is Bluetooth?

For many first-time smart TV buyers, or even second or third time buyers, Bluetooth may just be a buzzword you hear but do not know anything about. Equally, you might know what Bluetooth is but not have a clue about the full range of Bluetooth’s functionality. We’re here to dispel the myths and provide a handy user guide!

Bluetooth Definition

According to Oxford Languages, Bluetooth can be defined as:

What this means is that Bluetooth can be used to connect your devices together wirelessly.

What is Bluetooth used for?

Bluetooth is used to connect devices. Say, for example, you want to connect your phone to your smart TV. By turning on your Bluetooth receiver on your phone, you’ll be able to scan the room for devices to connect to. If your TV has a Bluetooth receiver then you’ll be able to see and connect to your TV with your phone. This allows you to cast videos or music to your TV, and use your phone to control what gets shown through apps like YouTube.

For those who enjoy surround sound for their televisions, sound bars and smart speakers nowadays will come with Bluetooth receivers built-in. This allows for your TV to be hooked up to a speaker you can place anywhere in your room (within 10 metres of the TV, of course).

Although less common, Bluetooth can also be used to share images and video files between devices. We won’t cover this in-depth today, as you’ll likely not need to use this functionality with your smart TV.

Checking if your TV has Bluetooth

Checking if you have a Bluetooth-compatible TV is easily done. There are a few methods we’ll cover:

Scan with your smartphone

If you own a smartphone and know how to use its Bluetooth features, you can use your phone’s Bluetooth scanner to find your TV.

When you open up the Bluetooth settings on your phone and activate your Bluetooth receiver, you’ll see a list of devices your phone has scanned and found. In this list, if your TV has Bluetooth enabled, you’ll see your TV model pop up.

If your TV doesn’t show up here or you’re not sure what your TV is called, there are a few other methods you can try.

Browse your TV’s settings

If you are familiar with your TV’s settings, you can access them using your remote control and look at the Bluetooth connectivity settings. Here you will see all the specific info for your TV if it has Bluetooth, and if you can enable Bluetooth from the settings window.

Check the back of the TV

On the back of your TV, there will be a few stickers with information printed on them. Usually, you’ll find information on these stickers about the TV’s functionality including Bluetooth. You should scan this information for any mentioned of Bluetooth or look for the Bluetooth symbol:

If you find this symbol or any information on the back about Bluetooth, you should follow the instructions to enable Bluetooth. If you are struggling to enable Bluetooth, check your TV’s manual.

Connecting your TV to Bluetooth Devices

Bluetooth was designed so that it would be simple and straightforward to connect two devices that are Bluetooth-compatible. The first step is making sure Bluetooth is enabled on your smart TV. You can accomplish this by navigating to your TV’s sharing options or settings to check if Bluetooth is enabled - this option usually sits under the wireless section or wireless settings.

After you’ve enabled Bluetooth on your smart TV, you’ll need to enable Bluetooth on your device. Often, with modern Bluetooth devices, the Bluetooth receiver will automatically switch on when you power up the device. If this is the case, all you’ll need to do is select the Bluetooth device on your TV’s scanner list and the devices will connect.

If you have an older Bluetooth device you might need to look for a button or a switch to turn on the receiver. All this does is add an extra step. If this is the case, make sure the switch or the button is pressed and then try to connect your device to your TV via your TV’s scanner list.

If you run into trouble connecting your TV and Bluetooth device, consult the instruction manuals for both your TV and device - these will usually have step-by-step instructions to troubleshoot any issues you are having.
