What do I need from a TV for gaming?
There are a few things you’ll need to consider when picking a TV for your gaming console or setup. The size of your space will be the most important thing to consider. There’s no point buying a huge 55 inch TV if you don’t have space on your desk or unit for it! Equally, if you have a gaming setup in your living room, you’ll want to consider if gaming is all the TV will be used for.
However, generally, there are a few features you’ll want to focus on when choosing a TV for gaming:
- The screen size. This is very important as it’ll impact your entertainment experience. You’ll need to find the right TV size for your needs. For more compact spaces and desks, such as in a bedroom, you’ll likely want to look at TVs on the smaller side between 20 to 30 inches. If you are arranging a gaming setup in a larger room, such as a living room, you’ll likely want to consider a larger screen size around 35 inches or more (perhaps even 50 to 60 inches).
- What entertainment systems will you be using? The system you are using will impact what TV you’ll need. For instance, if you have a gaming PC you’ll likely want a smaller screen with more settings to customise it, as PC gaming tends to require a wide range of different settings depending on the game you are playing. Whereas gaming consoles, when compared to PCs, have generalised standards for refresh rate and resolutions.

TVs For Console Gaming
For console gaming, assuming you have the latest generation of consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox X Series), you’ll need to get a TV that can handle a high refresh rate and resolution. For most games on these consoles you can run them at 144Hz and up to 2K resolution.
However, if you have older consoles, they likely won’t be able to handle 144Hz and 2K resolution - you’ll likely need a TV that can handle 60Hz and up to 1080p resolution. The good news is that if the TV you choose can handle modern consoles, it’ll be able to handle older consoles.
The only exception to this rule is retro consoles like the PlayStation 1 & 2, or Xbox and Xbox 360 (or even older consoles). They usually require a SCART connection - but we won’t get into that here.
For most modern consoles, you’ll need a TV with an HDMI connection, HD resolution, and 60Hz refresh rate, such as:
